This cool, minty bourbon cocktail is a porch-sipping classic, famously served at the Kentucky Derby and beloved for its refreshing simplicity. It’s the perfect drink when you want to feel a little bit fancy — silver cup optional, but highly recommended.

Southern Mint Julep

Ingredients:
Cocktail:
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (or 1 tsp sugar)
  • Fresh mint leaves (about 8–10)
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig for garnish
Mocktail:
  • 1/2 oz mint simple syrup (or muddle fresh mint with sugar)
  • 4 oz ginger ale or sparkling water
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig for garnish

Instructions:
Cocktail:
  1. Gently muddle mint and simple syrup (or sugar) in the bottom of a julep cup or short glass.
  2. Fill the glass with crushed ice.
  3. Pour bourbon over the ice, stir lightly.
  4. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig.
Mocktail:
  1. Muddle mint and syrup in a glass.
  2. Fill with crushed ice.
  3. Top with ginger ale or sparkling water, stir gently.
  4. Garnish with a mint sprig.
